Once they returned from town, Cindy dropped off Janeen at Jordan’s with a promise to see her the next day.

Janeen had enjoyed herself immensely. Cindy had confided that she’d never tried to wear cosmetics because she didn’t know what to choose for herself or how to apply it. The one time she had experimented with makeup—as a teenager—her dad told her she looked like a rodeo clown. Since then, Cindy had never worn anything.

Janeen had promised that she would show Cindy how to apply makeup so that it would look natural. Cindy had been dubious but willing to try.

Just as Janeen put her casserole in the oven, she heard her cell phone ringing. She hurried down the hall to her room, where she’d left her purse.

“H’lo?”

“How’re you doing today?” Lindsey asked.

“Actually, I’ve had a busy day. Went riding with Jordan early this morning—and when I say early, the sun hadn’t come up yet—made a casserole for tonight, which I just put in the oven, and Cindy came over to visit this afternoon.”

“Oh! What’s she like?”

“I don’t know what I was expecting, but she surprised me. She’s been surrounded by males all her life, so I guess it’s natural that she walks, talks and acts like one of the guys. She actually seemed hungry for some female company. We went into town and got a few cosmetics this afternoon, and she said she’d be back tomorrow so I can show her how to use them.”

“So you’ve adopted her as a little sister, have you?”

Janeen laughed. “Not so little. She’s half a head taller than I am. But you’re right. I can’t help but feel sorry for her. Jordan obviously takes her for granted. I mean, I’m sure he must have noticed when she drove up but he didn’t bother to come over to say hello, must less show any affection for her.”

“No kidding.”

“The sad part is that she seems to have accepted his casualness. She’s waiting for him to set a date for their wedding, and he acts as though it’s no big deal. I think he needs a swift boot in the butt for treating her that way.”

“What does she look like?” Lindsey asked.

“Well, she’s tall—as I mentioned—slender, with light red hair that’s probably been somewhat bleached by the sun. Her green eyes are surrounded by thick, long lashes, but they’re too light to really show up, and she has a gorgeous smile. She appears easygoing, which I guess she would have to be to put up with Jordan.”

“So all she really needs is some tutoring about girly stuff, huh?”

“That’s what I think.”

“How’s Jordan treating you?”

“Shall I answer politely or truthfully?”

“Uh-oh. That doesn’t sound good. Let’s go for the truth.”

“He’s rude and inconsiderate and that’s when he’s on his best behavior. I guess he can’t help being gruff. You already warned me that he isn’t one to socialize. I’m sure he’s doing his best. He took me to town yesterday to get something to read while I’m here, which he didn’t have to do, and bought me supper while we were in town.
